While sweltering in another extended heat period we can read reports on climate change and how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but our federal and state governments keep approving more LNG greenfeilds, more CSG projects and coal mining that is to be exported to burn elsewhere on the planet. Spewing more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere and thousands of gas wells being drilled all over Australia with their burning off flares that emit alarming levels of methane! You really wonder who are the fools here....

Report: Off the Charts: Extreme Australian summer heat - Climate Commission:
 The length, extent and severity of the current Australian heatwave is unprecedented in the measurement record.
Although Australia has always had heatwaves, hot days and bushfires, climate change is increasing the risk of more frequent and longer heatwaves and more extreme hot days, as well as exacerbating bushfire conditions.
Climate change has contributed to making the current extreme heat conditions and bushfires worse.
Good community understanding of climate change risks is critical to ensure we take appropriate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to put measures in place to prepare for, and respond to, extreme weather.

Fly-in, fly-out workers have long divided regional communities, and now a parliamentary report says the practice threatens to 'hollow out several inland towns.'

The long-awaited federal inquiry, chaired by federal independent Tony Windsor, makes 21 recommendations, including improving housing and changes to tax benefits.

On Wednesday 13 February 2013, the House Standing Committee on Regional Australia tabled its report on the inquiry into the use of ‘fly-in, fly-out’ (FIFO) workforce practices in regional Australia entitled Cancer of the bush or salvation for our cities? Fly-in, fly-out and drive-in, drive-out workforce practices in Regional Australia.

It is so great to see all the little bush fires starting up all over the country and I am not taking fire with flames. I am talking about the flames within the hearts of Australian communities igniting by one share common vision. To protect: our water, retain our air quality and to shape strong healthy communities for the future of our children. 

The oil and gas corporations are so scared of their profit margins because the raising awareness and current impacts being experienced across the planet with climate change. So afraid are they, that they have planted their foot on the execrator of ravenousness greed and press down on the extermination  button in order to get as much, as quickly as possible before the people catch on to their hidden devious plans of gang raping the planet. 

What people are seeing currently in Australia is the grass roots development of a national movement. A moment that is growing out of all the local regional struggles whether is about saving forests, stopping GCS and preserving our water tables, or desperately trying to save the Great Barrier Reef, halting coal mines or trains, saving and protecting the whales or stopping a proposal for a massive LNG refineries being build, the fights, the tactics, the inferences and platitudes are all the same. 

We are linking up by supporting and sharing information, knowledge and experience. This Movement is increasing in momentum and together we are advocating for our society’s central values and our sustainable sensibilities

Govt defends axing of greenhouse gas controls - The West Australian:
A Government department overseen by Premier Colin Barnett pushed for pollution restrictions on Woodside Petroleum's $40 billion gas hub to be lifted just weeks before WA's Environment Minister axed them.

Days after Bill Marmion came under fire for removing greenhouse gas conditions on Chevron's Wheatstone project, it has emerged the Department of State Development asked for similar concessions for the Browse LNG development.

The Wilderness Society says it hopes a Supreme Court challenge will result in a review of the environmental approvals of the Kimberley gas hub.

The society, together with traditional land owner Richard Hunter, has launched the legal action against the Environmental Protection Authority and the Environment Minister Bill Marmion.

The first hearing is scheduled for this morning in Perth.

Society spokesman Peter Robertson says the court action was filed after the EPA's chairman made the sole decision to approve the gas hub because all other board members had a perceived conflict of interest.

"The outcome that we're hoping for is that the Supreme Court will agree with us that the way that the EPA handled this fiasco was unlawful," he said.

"And, therefore any so-called approvals that arise from is should be overturned - that's what we're seeking."

But the man known as "the Emperor" is not universally loved by business. In fact, many are privately irked by his interventionist and often dictatorial style.

And for a man who wants nothing more than to leave behind a legacy of major developments, he has failed miserably to advance his two pet mega-projects: the $6 billion Oakajee port and rail network in the state's mid-west and the proposed $40bn Browse LNG project near Broome.

Senior executives at Woodside and Shell, the main companies behind Browse, are known to be angry with Mr Barnett for insisting the gas plant be built at James Price Point even if that turns out to be an uneconomic option.

Mr Barnett's headstrong approach has, in fact, contributed to some of the delays and endless legal brawls that have erupted over James Price Point, but the Premier has responded to criticisms by suggesting no project of this magnitude has ever been developed smoothly.

And of course it’s driven a wedge through local communities. It’s created a great deal of social unrest, and there’ll be more of that in the future.

The West Kimberley is not a place for sale. It’s not a place that we can trash. And I for one don’t want to be part of the generation that’s responsible for doing that".

After training as a research psychologist at the University of Western Australia and lecturing in a number of Australian universities, Dr Lawrence entered politics in 1986, serving at both State and Federal levels for 21 years. She was at various times W.A Minister for Education and Aboriginal affairs and was the first woman Premier and Treasurer of a State government. She shifted to Federal politics in 1994 when she was elected as the Member for Fremantle and was appointed Minister for Health and Human Services and Minister assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women. She has held various portfolios in Opposition, including Indigenous Affairs, Environment, Industry and Innovation and was elected national President of the Labor Party in 2004. She retired from politics in 2007.

Dr Lawrence is now Director of the Centre for the Study of Social Change in the School of Psychology at the University of Western Australia and Chair of the Australian Heritage Council.
