Traditional Owners outraged by Browse LNG works State Government deadline | The Stringer

Traditional Owners outraged by Browse LNG works State Government deadline | The Stringer: Woodside does state again and again that they are working with various Traditional Owners to manage the access and to minimise any damage. However Goolarabooloo Elders Joseph and Phillip Roe and Richard Hunter have questioned the cultural authority of the Elders the Government and Woodside are working with.

In a recent letter, RDL has written that it needs to dismantle signage and bollards so that Woodside can gain access to the dunes for drilling if they are not removed by April 6th. This has upset the Roes and Mr Hunter.

They said that the purpose of this infrastructure, installed in 2002 by the Goolarabooloo, is to protect ecologically and culturally sensitive sites along the Lurujarri Heritage Trail from inappropriate vehicle access and the growing impact of tourism. The infrastructure was funded primarily by the State and Federal Government bodies Coast West and Coast Care, with active support from the Shire of Broome, Department of Conservation and Land Management and the then Department of Land Administration.

The Goolarabooloo have vowed to fight this threat, with the support of the wider Broome community.
